Microsoft backs Mistral in multi-billion-euro European AI buildout

Mistral will add thousands of Nvidia GPUs and supply Microsoft, with models offered in ways that keep European data in-region.

Microsoft and Mistral announced a multi-billion-dollar deal to build AI infrastructure across Europe. Mistral is adding thousands of Nvidia Vera Rubin GPUs, and Microsoft will draw on that capacity for its cloud and AI services. Mistral's Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 models are now available in Microsoft Foundry, with Medium 3.5 also in Copilot Studio. Companies can run the models through Azure Local in the cloud, in their own environments, or offline.

The pitch targets regulated industries such as finance, healthcare, and manufacturing, where data residency matters. Microsoft President Brad Smith framed it as letting Europe use powerful AI without ceding control of its data. Mistral, founded in 2023, has grown revenue twentyfold to a run rate above $400 million and invested 1.2 billion euros in Swedish data centers. Bloomberg reports it is negotiating a roughly 3 billion euro round at about a 20 billion euro valuation.

For access to compute and AI tools, this expands capacity anchored in Europe rather than routed entirely through US hyperscalers. The offline and self-hosted options matter: they let organizations that cannot send data abroad still use frontier models, widening who can adopt the technology.

Caveats are modest but worth noting. The funding figures are Bloomberg's and still under negotiation, and the announcement comes from Microsoft. The GPU deployment is a buildout underway, not fully in place, so the real test is how much capacity comes online and at what price.
