Mouse Study Identifies Sleep-Sensing Neurons
Researchers identified a subset of cortical neurons called Sst-Chodl neurons that activate during slow-wave sleep and quiet wakefulness in mice. In 111 imaged cells, 95 showed activity during these states. When activated optogenetically, these neurons increased slow-wave and REM sleep duration while reducing time to fall asleep. The neurons project to key brain regions including visual, motor, and memory areas and generate delta waves. They constitute about 1 in 1,000 cortical neurons and roughly 1% of inhibitory neurons. The study, published in Nature, observed effects exclusively in laboratory mice. Human applicability remains unverified, and the exact mechanism is still unknown. This work could help develop targeted sleep therapies for disorders but requires further validation before clinical use.
