Mouse Study Shows Drug Combo Targets Aging and Cancer Simultaneously
Lifespan.io reports a mouse study published in *Aging* on August 13, 2026, demonstrating that a specific drug combination—dichloroacetate at 5 mM, metformin at 5 mM, and navitoclax at 1 μM—eliminates 60% of damage-induced senescent cells while sparing healthy cells. The treatment killed 75% of HeLa cancer cells, 80% of SW480 cancer cells, and practically all MCF-7 cancer cells (0% detected viability) after one week of exposure. Crucially, the navitoclax dose used (1 μM) is one-tenth of the 50 mg/kg dose typically employed in mouse studies, and this low dose did not cause thrombocytopenia. The study also improved treadmill performance and extended lifespan in older mice.
This approach targets two critical health pathways simultaneously: cellular senescence and cancer progression. The low-dose navitoclax avoids common side effects seen at higher doses, suggesting a potential for safer interventions. While the combination shows strong efficacy in mouse models, its impact on human health remains unproven.
For basic health needs, this work could eventually reduce cancer burden and aging-related disease costs if translated to humans. However, the current results are limited to mice, and effectiveness varies by cancer cell type. The next critical step is testing this combination in human clinical trials—where the FDA has not yet approved navitoclax for use. Until then, this remains a promising but preliminary finding in the field of aging research.
