NASA moves its Mars reactor-powered spacecraft toward building

NASA says work is underway on the nuclear power module for SR-1 Freedom, a planned fission-powered Mars mission.

NASA reported progress on SR-1 Freedom, a mission planned as the first fission-powered spacecraft to travel beyond Earth orbit. The update, dated Oct 20, 2026, says work is underway on the mission's key element, the nuclear power module. NASA and its partners have also mutually agreed to key contract actions meant to speed development.

The spacecraft is meant to go to Mars and deliver a science payload called SkyFall. Its main purpose is to demonstrate nuclear electric propulsion in deep space. The mission was announced at a NASA event called Ignition.

For abundance, the effect is distant. Compact, high-output power sources could someday make long-range travel and operations far from the Sun more practical, which touches energy, mobility and security. Nothing here lowers costs or widens access to energy on Earth in the near term, and we are not claiming it does.

The caveats are large. Our source text was truncated mid-quote and was mostly site navigation, so we have no contract terms, partner names, costs or launch dates. Watch for those details, and for any test results from the power module. The detail sits with NASA's full article.
