NASA selects lunar monitoring station for future moon base prep
NASA has designated the Lunar Environment Monitoring Station -- South Pole (LEMS-SP) for its Payloads and Research Investigations on the Surface of the Moon (PRISM) program. The station, led by Dr. Mehdi Benna from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will monitor micrometeoroid impacts, volatile abundances, and lunar seismic activity using a short-period seismometer. Scheduled for delivery via NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative in 2026, LEMS-SP aims to identify environmental hazards for future human habitats on the Moon. This work remains preparatory for potential lunar base operations and does not constitute current lunar infrastructure. The source describes only preparatory lunar monitoring activities with no operational base existing on the Moon at this time.
