NASA's Roman observatory is running nine months ahead of schedule
NASA is working toward an August 30 launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, officials said at a July 29 briefing — nine months ahead of the mission's formal launch readiness date of May 2027. Liftoff is scheduled for 7:26 a.m. Eastern on a Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center. The spacecraft was loaded last week with the propellant it will use to reach the Earth-Sun L-2 point and hold station there, and encapsulation in the rocket's fairing is expected in about three weeks.
Roman is built for volume rather than requests. Where most observatories allocate time to individual proposals, Roman will run three large surveys designed with the international scientific community, covering cosmology and exoplanets, across a five-year primary mission. Its 2.4-meter mirror feeds a high-gain antenna designed to downlink a terabyte of data a day. Commissioning starts immediately after launch with solar panel and sunshield deployment and a course-setting maneuver on day one, finishing about 100 days later when the spacecraft reaches L-2. The team rehearsed with 50 mission readiness tests totaling more than 1,100 hours, using the staff who will be on console.
Knowledge is the need this moves, and survey instruments move it differently than targeted ones: the output is a public map anyone can query, so the marginal cost of the next question asked of it falls toward nothing. Roman's surveys were deliberately overlapped with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory's, which works in visible light where Roman sees infrared — two instruments covering the same sky in complementary bands.
Early is not launched. August 30 is a target, and the science begins roughly 100 days after it.
