Nevada Transportation Authority approved permits for Tesla, Uber, and Waymo to operate commercial robotaxi services in Clark County. Tesla’s permit allows deployment of up to 5,000 vehicles, while Waymo’s permit covers up to 1,000 autonomous vehicles. Uber’s permit permits up to 1,000 robotaxis through partnerships with Motional and Zoox, and Zoox holds a permit for up to 100 vehicles. Tesla’s Cybercab chief engineer stated a 2025 deployment target of 2,500–3,000 vehicles.
This represents the first major state-level deployment of autonomous taxis in the U.S. The Clark County rollout focuses on the Golden Triangle—a region between Las Vegas airport, Las Vegas Boulevard, and surrounding areas where most autonomous vehicle testing occurs. Livery Operators Association opposed the permits, citing concerns about commercial transportation oversaturation and roadway overcrowding in this zone.
This deployment could reduce mobility costs for urban residents in Clark County by 2025 if technical and operational constraints are overcome. The scale remains limited to Clark County’s testing zone, with no nationwide rollout confirmed. What to watch: whether Tesla’s 2025 target aligns with permit ceilings, technical hurdles in dense urban corridors, and whether the Golden Triangle’s infrastructure supports sustained operations. Deployment numbers may fall short of permits due to operational realities, and the project remains confined to Nevada’s Clark County.
