Nigerian government opens 100 MW solar tender

Nigerian government launched a tender for a 100 MW solar project targeting energy poverty reduction in Niger State.

The Nigerian government has tendered the Niger State Solar Energy Development Project, a 100 MW solar power initiative located in Maikunkele, Niger State. The project splits into two technical lots: construction/installation and grid interconnection infrastructure. Prequalification for contractors closes October 13 with a fee of NGN 250,000 (equivalent to $200), and bids are scheduled for submission in January 2027. The government has applied to the Islamic Development Bank for financing.

This project advances Nigeria’s clean energy capacity, which currently stands at 4.9 GW operational and 188 MW under construction according to the Africa Solar Industry Association database. By adding 100 MW of grid-connected solar power, it directly addresses energy poverty for millions of Nigerians while reducing reliance on fossil fuels—a critical factor for both energy access and security in the region.
