Nio’s First Solar-Powered Battery Swap Station Opens in Xinjiang Desert
Nio opened its first fully solar-powered battery swap station at Xingxingxia service area in Xinjiang on September 23, 2026. The off-grid system uses Longi Block mobile energy stations and Longi H2D storage to operate 24 hours without staff, designed for extreme desert conditions where summer temperatures exceed 70°C and winter drop to -30°C. It is part of Nio’s 3,605-kilometer Silk Road battery swap route, though the company has 4,109 swap stations and 5,301 charging points operational across China as of that date. This deployment validates solar-powered off-grid battery swapping in remote regions, reducing grid strain and fossil fuel reliance for electric vehicles. The system activates emergency protocols during prolonged cloud cover to prioritize critical loads. As Nio’s first solar swap station, it addresses a key friction point: scaling EV infrastructure in areas with limited grid access while maintaining reliability in harsh environments.
*Note: This is Nio’s first deployment of solar-powered battery swapping. The 3,605-kilometer Silk Road route spans Nio’s existing network, not all 4,109 stations.
