Northrop Grumman launches a two-armed satellite repair craft
Northrop Grumman's Mission Robotic Vehicle, equipped with two robotic arms, launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral alongside three Mission Extension Pods, each a standalone spacecraft. The rocket deployed all four payloads within about an hour of liftoff. The craft will take roughly a year to reach a circular geosynchronous orbit more than 22,000 miles above the equator, and the mission is designed to run for about a decade.
The capability is the point. Unlike earlier Mission Extension Vehicles from 2019 and 2020, the MRV can install extension pods on multiple geosynchronous satellites, letting one servicer keep several aging spacecraft working. DARPA spent roughly $420 million on the robotics payload, developed with the Naval Research Laboratory and built with redundant arms and avionics, and Northrop Grumman added hundreds of millions more. DARPA first funded NRL's space robotics work back in 2002.
The abundance angle is asset longevity. Satellites are expensive and normally retired when they run low on fuel or fail. On-orbit servicing extends their working life, spreading the cost of orbital infrastructure over more years and reducing the need to launch replacements—lowering the effective cost of the communications and observation those satellites provide.
What to watch: the article calls this the most advanced servicer "we know about," acknowledging unknown classified systems. China has demonstrated its own orbital maneuvers with Shijian craft, described as apparent refueling, and the US Space Force has a separate Astroscale refueling demo planned for next year.
