Ohio Solar Project Faces Final Approval After Legal Hurdles

Oak Run Solar Project's path to grid connection remains uncertain despite staff recommendation

The Oak Run Solar Project, which would add 800 megawatts of solar capacity and 300 megawatts of energy storage to Ohio's grid, has been in legal limbo since its March 2024 approval. Madison County and three townships filed an appeal in October 2024, prompting the Ohio Supreme Court to issue a decision on May 26, 2024 that sent the case back to the Ohio Power Siting Board. The board staff recommended approval in August 2026, but no final decision date has been set. Ohio has blocked over 5.3 gigawatts of renewable projects since 2021, highlighting regulatory barriers. If approved, this project could significantly increase clean energy capacity in the state, potentially lowering household electricity costs and advancing renewable energy access.
