Perfect Day, a Californian startup, began commercial deliveries of its precision-fermented animal-free whey in Q1 2027 from a joint manufacturing facility with Zydus Lifesciences in Gujarat, India. The facility, established after Zydus Lifesciences acquired half of Sterling Biotech for $66 million in 2024, has a nameplate capacity of 2,500 tonnes annually. Perfect Day projects producing 2,000 tonnes in its first 12 months of operation. The company has been operating in 'incognito mode' since early 2024 to focus on manufacturing scale and commercial economics before returning to public visibility.
The technology—recombinant beta-lactoglobulin protein (ProFerm)—enables animal-free whey production without dairy animals. This addresses the core cost barrier for plant-based foods and supplements, potentially reducing dairy costs by 30–50% for these specific products.
This development moves abundance in SUSTENANCE by lowering the cost of key ingredients for plant-based foods and supplements. The scale-up in India supports wider adoption of affordable animal-free alternatives, though the cost reduction applies only to products using Perfect Day’s whey and depends on the company’s execution of its manufacturing expansion plan.
