DSM-Firmenich is advancing Protopia yeast protein to industrial scale, targeting 2,000–10,000 tons of annual production by 2027. The firm plans a 120,000-liter fermentation run later this year, converting underutilized Indian ethanol plant capacity into protein revenue. Protopia contains minimum 70% protein with a PDCAAS score of 0.94–0.96, matching fishmeal quality while showing superior palatability in pet food trials and no off-flavors in human applications. It competes with fishmeal at €2,000–€3,000/ton for aquaculture, directly replacing fishmeal in salmon diets at a 1:1 ratio. This approach reduces waste from ethanol production—where Indian facilities face government biofuel mandates—and avoids fishmeal dependency, which currently costs €3,000/ton amid El Niño disruptions to Peru’s anchovy industry.

Protopia’s feedstock agnosticism (using ethanol, methanol, acetate, sugar, or molasses) enables flexible deployment without novel food approvals in the US or EU. This scalability addresses a critical gap in sustainable aquaculture feed, potentially lowering costs for fish farming while reducing pressure on wild fish stocks. For food security, it offers a cheaper, waste-reducing alternative to fishmeal that could expand protein access in regions with ethanol surplus.

What to watch: Regulatory clearance in India and Brazil—where Protopia’s 2027 facility location depends on access to bioethanol and beet sugar sources—remains pending. Current fishmeal pricing reflects temporary El Niño disruptions; sustained price stability would be needed for Protopia to achieve its cost advantage.
