Roanoke City Schools Deploy Virginia’s First Solar-Battery Microgrids for Disaster Resilience
Roanoke City Public Schools has installed Virginia’s first solar-plus-storage microgrids at two high schools designated as official disaster shelters. The systems use battery storage with diesel generators as backup power, designed to run continuously until batteries deplete before activating generators. This configuration serves nearly 9.4 megawatts of solar capacity across 29 sites, covering 44% of the schools’ energy needs. The project saves over $22 million in electricity costs over 35 years and avoids $24 million in roof replacement expenses.
