Roman Space Telescope's Wide Field Instrument Activated

NASA powered up the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope's 300-megapixel infrared camera after 10 days of cooling.

NASA activated the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope's Wide Field Instrument (WFI) on September 11, 2026. This 300-megapixel infrared camera—designed to survey vast cosmic regions with Hubble-like resolution—completed 10 days of cooling from -85°F (-65°C) to -225°F (-143°C) before activation. The instrument features 18 infrared detectors with light-sensitive areas roughly the size of a laptop screen. It passed early commissioning tests for filter wheel operation and focusing calibration, while the Coronagraph Instrument confirmed remote system control including thermal management. First science images are expected by early 2027, though the telescope will reach the second Lagrange point (L2) after commissioning.

The WFI's capability to capture sky areas larger than the apparent size of a full moon in a single image represents a significant scale shift for infrared astronomy. This allows the telescope to map large portions of the cosmos with unprecedented efficiency, potentially identifying exoplanets in distant star systems through repeated surveys.

For cosmic knowledge, this activation enables larger-scale exoplanet discovery potential by providing high-resolution infrared data across vast sky regions. The instrument’s design directly addresses the challenge of detecting faint, distant objects by surveying extensive areas with minimal overlap.

Next, the Coronagraph Instrument requires 30 additional days of decontamination before full science readiness. All timelines remain subject to commissioning adjustments. The telescope’s operational status is currently at a milestone phase—not yet conducting active science operations.
