SciPinion's AI Toolkit Accelerates FDA GRAS Approvals for Food Companies

SciPinion's AI tool cuts FDA GRAS review time from months to 10 minutes, potentially lowering food production costs as the agency prepares to overhaul its safety pathway.

SciPinion launched SciBridge, an AI toolkit that generates full similarity reports between food ingredients and FDA-cleared precedents in about 10 minutes. This contrasts sharply with traditional FDA GRAS reviews, which currently take up to 180 days for each of approximately 75 annual notices. The tool specifically targets the FDA’s August 2026 proposal to scrap the self-affirmation GRAS pathway, where companies must now submit detailed safety evidence. SciBridge includes human expert review and has already helped TurtleTree achieve GRAS status for recombinant bovine lactoferrin.

SciBridge works by comparing manufacturing processes and intended uses against previously approved precedents. It targets exemptions under the proposed rule where conditions are substantially equivalent to existing reviews. The toolkit includes three components: a GRAS database browser, a rapid similarity checker, and a field-by-field substantial similarity evaluator.

This acceleration could lower food production costs for companies navigating the FDA’s upcoming changes, particularly for substitutional ingredients. Faster approvals may expand access to safer food options without increasing prices, though the tool’s effectiveness depends on manufacturing processes aligning with prior reviews.

What to watch: The FDA’s proposal remains in public consultation (not finalized), and SciPinion’s estimate of 'tens of thousands' substitutional ingredients relies on their assessment. The tool only applies where processes and uses are substantially equivalent to existing reviews.
