Scotland's Coalburn 1 Battery Begins Commercial Operations

Europe's largest grid-scale battery project enters service in Scotland, part of a growing UK portfolio targeting renewable integration.

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) completed commercial operations for Coalburn 1, a 500 MW/1 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS), in August 2026 at a former coal site near Glasgow. This project—supplied by Canadian Solar's e-Storage division—marks CIP's first transmission-connected battery in Scotland, with two additional projects (Coalburn 2 and Devilla) planned. The system includes contracts for 300 MW power output over 15 years and 75 MW over 7 years, managed by RES under a July 2025 agreement. Coalburn 1 is the first of CIP's seven UK grid-scale projects, which collectively deliver 4.3 GW of capacity.
