Segway's new commuter scooter buys range with a bigger battery

The MAX G3 Plus carries 717 Wh, up 20%, for a claimed 56 miles; it ships in the US on 25 August from $1,149.99.

Segway has launched the MAX G3 Plus, an upgrade to its flagship commuter scooter. The battery grows 20 percent to 717 watt-hours, which the company translates into up to 56 miles of range in lower power modes — measured, per Segway's method, until the scooter can no longer hold 60 percent of the selected mode's top speed. Peak motor output is 2,200 watts, top speed is 28 mph, the scooter weighs 55.6 lb and carries up to 286 lb.

The safety list is longer than the range list: a combined braking system blending regenerative and disc braking, anti-lock braking, traction control, dual hydraulic suspension with adjustable rear damping, dedicated rear turn signals alongside handlebar indicators, self-sealing 11-inch tyres, automatic headlights with high and low beams, and Apple Find My support. A 2.4-inch display handles navigation, and the charger does a full refill in four hours, or three with dual cables.

It ships in the US from 25 August at an introductory $1,149.99 against a $1,499.99 list price.

Micromobility is the cheapest way to make a city commute independent of a car, and the cost per mile travelled is already far below anything else motorised. That is the abundance content. But every figure above is Segway's, with no independent testing, and the claimed gain over the previous model is worth reading carefully: the official comparison is six extra miles, while the source notes that measured on identical terms the two models' numbers are not directly comparable.
