Eindhoven University of Technology's solar ambulance prototype enters field testing for off-grid regions

Eindhoven University of Technology developed the Stella Juva, a solar-powered ambulance prototype designed for remote off-grid regions lacking reliable roads, electricity, or fuel. Weighing 1,350 kg (3,000 lb)—less than half the weight of standard operational ambulances—it achieves a daily driving range of 444 miles (715 km) under full sunlight. The vehicle includes medical equipment for tuberculosis screening, prenatal ultrasound, malaria rapid testing, and automated external defibrillation, with a medical cabin functioning as a standalone emergency room. Field testing began in Kenya this month.

The Stella Juva uses All Back Contact photovoltaic panels from Chinese manufacturer AIKO and features open-source engineering blueprints. Its lithium-based battery pack (50-kWh) enables operation without grid dependency, targeting the estimated one billion people globally who live in remote off-grid regions lacking reliable roads, electricity or fuel.

This prototype addresses critical healthcare access gaps in underserved areas by providing mobile medical services without grid infrastructure. If field testing proves viable, it could expand emergency care availability where traditional ambulances cannot operate. However, it remains a non-commercial proof-of-concept intended for student-led field trials, not mass production.
