Solar was 55% of Latvia's electricity in June

Latvia has passed 1,521 MW installed and added about 601 MW in 2026 so far, nearly double its previous annual record with five months left to run.

Latvia's installed solar capacity has reached 1,521 MW, according to the Latvian Renewable Energy Alliance. About 601 MW of that was added in 2026 alone, which already beats the country's previous annual record of 319 MW set in 2024, with five months of the year still to run. Microgenerators of up to 11.1 kW account for roughly 220 MW of the total.

The generation number is the one that should travel. Data from AST, Latvia's transmission system operator, shows solar produced 274 GWh in June against 495 GWh of total electricity generation — 55%. A country at 57 degrees north, with a winter that barely sees the sun, spent a month getting the majority of its power from panels. That is not a story about Latvian sunshine. It is a story about a module price that has fallen roughly 99.6% since 1975, far enough that latitude stopped being the binding constraint.

The caveats belong in the same breath. June is the best month of the Latvian year and a June share says nothing about January, when the same fleet produces almost nothing and the system runs on imports, hydro and gas. A 55% month in a high-latitude country is an argument for storage and interconnection, not a claim that the problem is solved. July's figures have not been published yet.
