Southern California Adds 27 MW Electric Semi Charging Hub
EV Realty has acquired a 27 MW charging hub site in Southern California’s Inland Empire, targeting electric semi truck operations at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The facility—located near east-west SR-60 and north-south I-15 freeways, within 3 miles of Ontario International Airport—will serve as a regional charging node for freight fleets. Construction begins early 2027, with chargers operational before 2028. The site specifically addresses Southern California’s grid constraints, which EV Realty identifies as a key factor in its location choice.
This infrastructure addition targets the epicenter of U.S. truck electrification, as EV Realty’s CEO describes the area. However, the project delivers incremental capacity without reducing overall trucking costs or emissions at scale. The charging hub supports existing fleet transitions but does not yet alter the fundamental economics of freight transportation.
For the need of affordable, reliable freight movement, this represents a step toward scaling electric freight infrastructure in high-demand corridors. It could lower long-term energy costs for trucking operations once grid constraints are managed and electric fleet adoption accelerates. But without widespread adoption of electric semi trucks—whose production status remains 'allegedly in production'—this hub alone won’t reduce freight costs or emissions significantly. The next critical watch is whether grid constraints can be resolved to support this infrastructure’s full potential, and whether electric semi truck adoption actually scales beyond pilot fleets.
