Stem cell transplant for spinal cord injury clears early safety test

A phase 1 trial published in Nature Medicine reports on an iPSC-derived neural progenitor cell therapy transplanted into people with subacute, complete spinal cord injury. The headline result is long-term safety follow-up, which is what an early trial is designed to establish before any question of effectiveness can be settled.

Induced pluripotent stem cells are reprogrammed from a patient's own or donor cells and coaxed into neural progenitors — cells that could, in principle, help repair damaged spinal tissue. Complete spinal cord injury currently has no restorative treatment, so even a safety signal in this population matters.

For health, the significance is that regenerative repair of the spinal cord moves from concept toward a tested clinical procedure.
