Student-built solar ambulance aims to bring clinics to off-grid villages
A student team at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands has built a solar-powered vehicle called Stella Juva, which they describe as the world's first solar-powered ambulance. Rather than rushing patients to hospitals, it is designed to bring healthcare to remote off-grid communities directly, functioning more as a mobile clinic than a transport vehicle.
The vehicle runs on a 50 kWh battery paired with 542 solar cells — 326 built into the roof and 216 on extendable panels — feeding a self-developed inverter the team reports runs at 97% efficiency. It measures 5 by 1.9 meters, weighs 1,350 kg, and tops out at 120 km/h. The team claims a range of up to 715 km on paved roads and an average of 360 km off-road. Onboard equipment includes a vaccine and medicine cooler, a portable X-ray machine, an ultrasound device, a blood pressure monitor, a thermometer, and a defibrillator.
For communities without grid power or nearby clinics, a vehicle that carries diagnostic tools and refrigerated medicine while charging itself from the sun addresses two scarcities at once: energy and access to basic care. It sidesteps the fuel and infrastructure that usually gate mobile health services.
The team planned to travel to Kenya in August to simulate real healthcare delivery scenarios, which will test whether the claimed ranges and equipment hold up in the field. The 715 km figure and the world-first claim come from the students themselves, and off-road range depends heavily on terrain. Worth watching whether this student project matures into something deployable.
