Study Finds Prescribed Burns Saved Roughly 1,900 Giant Sequoias
New research published in Nature Communications found that controlled burns clearing flammable underbrush saved thousands of giant sequoias during recent wildfires. Using aerial and satellite imagery, the study examined more than 26,000 trees and compared how they fared in the Castle and KNP Complex fires.
Sequoias that had received a prescribed burn in the previous decade were about four times more likely to survive. The analysis estimated the burns saved roughly 1,900 trees, and that an additional 3,900 could have been saved had the treatment been applied to every tree in the study area.
The finding matters for a shared resource that cannot be replaced on any human timescale. It also points to economics: prescribed burns are a comparatively cheap, low-tech preventive tool, and the study gives land managers measured evidence that spending on them ahead of fire season protects far more than it costs.
