Supercooling keeps donor kidneys viable for days in animal tests
Researchers have built a device that cools organs to around -4°C (25°F) without triggering the ice formation that normally destroys tissue. Standard practice keeps donor organs on ice near 4°C (39°F), a temperature that only buys a short window before the organ becomes unusable. Earlier attempts to go colder failed because freezing caused ice crystals and cellular damage.
In the reported work, the team applied supercooled preservation to pig organs. Pig kidneys held in the supercooled state for days were then transplanted successfully, according to the fact sheet. The result rests on avoiding ice while pushing well below the conventional cold-storage temperature.
The clock is one of the tightest constraints in transplantation. Organs that expire in transit are organs that never reach a patient, and geography routinely rules out otherwise-viable matches. Extending viability from hours toward days would widen the pool of usable organs, allow longer-distance sharing, and reduce waste in a supply that is chronically short. That is a direct expansion of a scarce, life-saving resource.
The important caveat: this was demonstrated in pigs, not humans, and the report comes from a newsletter aggregating many items rather than a full study writeup. Human organs differ in size and tolerance, and moving from animal proof-of-concept to clinical transplant programs is a long road. Watch for peer-reviewed data and any move toward human trials before treating the days-long window as real for patients.
