The startup teaching robots to install utility-scale solar

Maximo, incubated inside AES, is using AI vision to automate the placing of solar modules, though it has shared no field numbers yet.

Maximo, an AI-enabled robotics startup, is building machines to install solar modules on utility-scale sites using camera-based AI vision. The company was founded and is led by Deise Yumi Asami and was developed and incubated inside the AES Corporation. Asami laid out the approach — robotics, machine vision, and field deployment applied to solar construction — in an interview on The Robot Report's podcast.

Asami brings more than 15 years in the energy industry, having joined AES Brazil in 2016, where her work included microgrid software, pilot projects, and the implementation of Brazil's first utility-scale lithium-ion battery storage system. The job Maximo is targeting is the unglamorous, repetitive core of a solar farm: lifting panels off pallets and fixing them to racking, thousands of times a day, in sun and dust.

That is where automation could matter for abundance. On utility-scale projects, labor and installation time are a meaningful slice of the cost of the finished plant; a machine that places modules faster and more consistently could shave the price of new clean generation and let developers build more of it per season. Cheaper, quicker solar construction feeds directly into cheaper energy.

The caveat is that this is still a promise, not a proof. The source is a podcast conversation, and it offers no deployment sites, no cost or throughput figures, and no timeline. Until Maximo shows how many modules its robots place per day, and at what cost against human crews, treat this as a direction worth watching rather than a result.
