Toyota Tests Hydrogen Truck in Dakar Rally
Toyota Gazoo Racing debuted a hydrogen fuel cell-powered Hilux truck in the 2027 Dakar Rally (January 1–15), competing in the 621-mile Future Mission 1000 category. The vehicle replaced Toyota’s standard twin-turbo V6 engine with a '2.5-generation' hydrogen fuel cell system—bridging second-generation Mirai technology and upcoming heavy-duty models—while partnering with Jameel Motorsport, DENSO, Toyo Tires, and IAV. Thermal management systems were specifically engineered for desert conditions, including dust filtration and temperature control, to produce only water vapor as exhaust. This prototype, designed for rally validation, is a one-off unit not intended for consumer markets. Toyota aims to use 2027 rally data to validate the system for commercial road vehicles by 2028.
The significance lies in Toyota’s targeted progression: this hydrogen system addresses long-haul mobility friction by potentially reducing refueling dependency and emissions for heavy transport. If scaled, it could lower the cost and logistical barriers for hydrogen-powered trucks—critical for reducing fuel friction in remote regions.
