Two PlayStation 5 titles now run at 30 FPS on a free emulator

Kyty reached playable 3D PS5 gameplay about two weeks after the first 3D titles would boot at all.

The Kyty PS5 emulator now runs 3D PlayStation 5 games at playable framerates, roughly two weeks after 3D titles first became bootable at all. XIII, the 2020 remake, reaches up to 30 FPS and accepts real-time input, though environments and textures visibly fail to render in several scenes. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Wrath of the Mutants sits just under 25 FPS — choppy, but stable with no glitches reported once past a crash on first launch. Other 3D titles boot but perform far worse.

Two projects are moving at different speeds by choice. Kyty is chasing game-by-game compatibility, which is why it has the demos. SharpEmu is working on accuracy and low-level infrastructure instead, the kind of fix standing between a title like Astro Bot and reaching gameplay at all. Both are free, and the wider scene includes RPCSX and independent developers.

Emulation is how software outlives the hardware it shipped on. With Sony winding down physical discs, whether a purchased game remains playable in a decade depends on unpaid volunteers rebuilding the machine in code — which is the cheapest possible route to permanent access, and the least funded.

The caveats are most of the picture at this stage. This is one outlet's report on community demos of two games with visible defects, weeks into the effort, on an emulator that cannot yet run the great majority of the library.
