UK scientists to grow mini-human organs for drug testing
UK researchers at Cambridge are developing miniature human organs—known as organoids—from NHS patients' cells to improve drug testing accuracy and reduce animal use. A £20m Medical Research Council-funded project will initially focus on inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, with later expansion to cancer and neurological conditions. This approach aims to replace animal testing procedures that historically accounted for 90% of UK animal research (mice, rats, fish, or birds) and potentially cut the number of animals needed per test cycle by 50–100, as demonstrated by company VivoSphere’s heart cell models. The initiative aligns with the UK’s strategy to reduce animal research through 'new approach methodologies,' though it does not eliminate animal use entirely.
Organoids mirror key organ features at scales smaller than a millimetre, including disease responses and drug interactions. By creating standardized human models, the project seeks to accelerate drug development while lowering costs—particularly for conditions affecting millions of patients. For inflammatory bowel diseases alone, where 2.54 million animal testing procedures occurred in the UK in 2025 (a 3.8% decline from 2024), this could mean faster access to affordable treatments.
This shift moves abundance toward more accessible medicines for IBD patients by reducing the time and expense of clinical trials. However, researchers caution that organoids cannot model all human diseases or complex physiological responses, and the 2025 animal testing figure reflects only UK procedures. The project’s impact on global drug development remains limited to its scope, and animal testing will persist as part of the broader strategy—though the reduction in animal use could lower costs for pharmaceuticals over time.
