University of South Carolina Researchers Report Drug That Regenerates Neurons and Reversed Alzheimer’s Symptoms in Mice
University of South Carolina researchers developed TN-PTBP1, a drug delivered via nanoparticles that converts astrocytes into neurons. In an Alzheimer’s disease mouse study (8-month-old models), two injections over two weeks improved memory performance compared to saline controls. The treated mice also showed increased neuron density in the hippocampus and another brain region, alongside reduced inflammation, fewer toxic protein clumps, and strengthened blood-brain barrier proteins. Globally, 24 million people are affected by Alzheimer’s, but this research remains confined to mice.
The mechanism—using antibodies to target PTBP1 protein and trigger neural regeneration—represents a potential pathway for reversing cognitive decline. If human trials confirm safety and efficacy, it could reduce long-term care costs and free up resources from managing Alzheimer’s-related health burdens. Currently, however, the drug’s effects are unproven in humans.
The next critical step is clinical trial validation for human safety and efficacy. Until then, the mouse model results offer no direct path to human treatment. Researchers must address the significant gap between rodent outcomes and human biology to avoid overestimating this approach’s impact on global health needs.
