V2G Systems Test Grid Support at European Sites
A V2G system draws power from parked electric vehicle batteries to supply municipal grids during peak electricity demand, then recharges vehicles during off-peak periods. The technology was tested at Porto airport in Portugal and Isle of Wight hotels in England under the DriVe2X project. Implementation requires bidirectional charging compliant with ISO 15118-20 standards, but current deployment is constrained by inconsistent manufacturer adherence to these specifications. As noted by EDP R&D Project Manager Samuel Matias, 'the number of vehicles that are actually compatible is still very limited.' This technical limitation restricts the system’s scale beyond test sites and requires overcoming regulatory barriers for broader adoption. The system lowers electricity costs during peak periods but does not yet reduce the need for new power plants. Source reported October 4, 2026.
