Verley targets 200,000L fermentation tanks for scalable dairy protein

French precision fermentation startup Verley is advancing toward commercial production of dairy protein beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) in 200,000-liter fermentation tanks by late 2026

Verley, a French precision fermentation startup, targets completion of 200,000-liter fermentation tanks by late 2026 for commercial-scale production of dairy protein beta-lactoglobulin (BLG). The company expects commercial sales starting in 2027 after securing US GRAS regulatory approval (effective September 2025) and pursuing Canadian and European approvals. Verley’s current BLG product matches Arla’s pricing at $40 per kilogram, enabling 25-50% of daily protein needs in 100ml of low-viscosity protein shots. While Verley’s technology achieves 13% protein concentration in UHT yogurt (vs. conventional 9%), it remains focused on downstream processing optimization for 100% protein recovery.

This progress could lower costs for high-value dairy protein alternatives without animal farming, potentially making protein-rich foods more accessible. However, regulatory timelines for Canada and Europe remain uncertain, and the 200,000-liter target requires finalization within months. Price parity with Arla applies to current production scale; scaling may reduce costs further but hasn’t yet occurred.
