Vietnam's electric two-wheelers reach a third of new sales as Honda's share slips

Electric models now make up roughly 32% of Vietnam's new motorcycle and scooter sales, and two of the top four sellers are electric-focused brands.

Vietnam recorded more than 3 million motorcycle and scooter sales in the first nine months of 2026, up 25.9% on the same period of 2025. Electric two-wheelers drove much of that growth: their sales rose 90.5% to 973,247 units, roughly 32% of all new sales in the country.

Honda is still the largest seller, with sales up 8.4% this year. But VinFast, a Vietnamese EV maker, ranks second with sales up 152.1%. Yamaha is third and electric maker Yadea is fourth, so two of the top four are electric-focused brands. Honda's sales are growing, yet its overall market share is shrinking, though the source gives no figure for the loss.

This matters for mobility because the motorcycle is the everyday vehicle for a large share of people in Vietnam. When a third of new purchases are electric, a cheap, widely used form of transport is moving away from gasoline. That should lower running costs for riders over time and cut urban air pollution. The government is pursuing that goal, including plans to restrict gasoline motorcycles in parts of Hanoi.

The caveats are real. This is one country, and the source does not claim the pattern holds globally. The sales figures are described as newly released nationwide data, but the issuing body isn't named. The Hanoi restrictions are plans, not enacted rules. The idea that Honda's dominance faces a serious challenge is the author's interpretation. Watch whether electric share keeps climbing once the restrictions are decided, and whether Honda's share loss gets quantified.
