Volkswagen Files China's First All-Electric ID. ERA 5X SUV

Volkswagen's regulatory filing for its first all-electric model in the ID. ERA lineup marks a key step in China-focused electric vehicle production.

SAIC Volkswagen filed a regulatory submission for the ID. ERA 5X SUV with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on August 7, 2026. This compact electric vehicle—measuring 4,560 mm in length, 1,896 mm in width, and 1,630 mm in height—features a 5-seat layout and uses a lithium iron phosphate battery from CATL. It draws power from a 155 kW electric motor (capable of 175 km/h top speed) and is built on Volkswagen's China Main Platform (CMP) with the CEA architecture co-developed by Volkswagen and Xpeng. The filing positions the ID. ERA 5X as Volkswagen's first global production model on this platform.

The significance lies in the CMP's design: it aims to streamline manufacturing for cost efficiency in China's electric vehicle market. By sharing this platform across multiple models, Volkswagen seeks to reduce production complexity and material costs—a potential pathway to lowering prices for affordable electric vehicles.

This filing advances the availability of electric vehicles in China, where the CMP architecture could eventually enable more accessible, standardized electric models.
