Volkswagen slashes Chinese EV price threshold with LiDAR update

Volkswagen Anhui lowered entry prices for two Chinese EV models by 20,000 yuan each while adding LiDAR-based driver assistance, making them the first fully electric Volkswagen models in China priced b

Volkswagen Anhui updated the ID. UNYX 06 and ID. UNYX 07 models in China with LiDAR-powered driver assistance systems and reduced starting prices. The ID. UNYX 07 now starts at 99,900 yuan ($14,860) for its Lite variant—making it the first fully electric Volkswagen model in China priced below 100,000 yuan. The ID. UNYX 06 starts at 119,900 yuan ($17,850) for its Lite variant. Both models feature 77.5 kWh batteries and reduced prices of 20,000 yuan compared to their May 2026 launch pricing. This update occurred less than five months after the initial model releases.

The price reduction directly targets mass-market affordability in China’s EV sector. With the ID. UNYX 07 now the first VW model under 100,000 yuan, it lowers the entry barrier for Chinese consumers who previously faced higher costs for electric vehicles. The inclusion of LiDAR-based driver assistance—powered by Horizon Robotics’ Journey 6H chip—enhances safety features without increasing the price threshold.

This move accelerates EV adoption in China by making electric vehicles accessible to a broader segment of the population. Lower upfront costs reduce transportation expenses for households and decrease reliance on fossil fuels, advancing energy access and affordability for millions. The price drop also signals Volkswagen’s commitment to scaling affordable EVs in the Chinese market through its Anhui joint venture.

What to watch: Whether the promotional pricing lasts beyond October 2026 and how real-world adoption impacts China’s EV market share. Caveats: Prices apply to specific variants during limited promotions; CLTC range figures represent maximum achievable conditions under testing protocols.
