Wildfire smoke now bigger prenatal threat than human pollution sources

A University of Maryland, College Park study published in *Frontiers in Environmental Health* (2026) analyzed air pollution exposure for 65 million births across the U.S. between 2003 and 2019. It found human sources reduced prenatal PM2.5 exposure by 37% during this period, while wildfire smoke contributions to PM2.5 exposure doubled. This growth offset Clean Air Act emissions reductions for the prenatal period, meaning wildfire smoke now accounts for an increasing share of 'acute, massive air pollution days' that endanger fetal health. Low-income, rural, and Indigenous populations bore the heaviest burden of this shift. The study does not measure maternal behaviors like outdoor exposure duration or home air filtration use, nor does it link wildfire smoke to preterm birth or birthweight outcomes. EPA datasets used in the analysis stop at 2019, and authors note 2026 air quality projections remain speculative. This friction in clean air access threatens to reverse progress in prenatal health for vulnerable groups as wildfire smoke increasingly dominates pollution sources in Western and Northwest regions.
