Zanskar drilled a dying geothermal field back to life
Zanskar bought the Lightning Dock geothermal field in New Mexico in 2024 and has spent a year working it. The site's original wells were shallow, under 2,500 feet, and had been losing heat at between five and ten times the rate of an average well — cooling roughly 50F to around 250F, below what the 15 MW plant supplying New Mexico's largest utility was designed to need. Zanskar drilled a new well to 8,000 feet. It runs above 300F, and the company says heat levels are now above where they were before the decline, with the well occasionally supplying more heat than the existing plant can take.
Repowering a declining field is the cheapest geothermal there is, and it is chronically underrated. The plant, the turbine, the transmission line and the interconnection agreement all already exist and are all already paid for. Replacing the resource underneath an idle asset avoids most of what makes a new geothermal project expensive, and there is a long list of underperforming fields in the western United States in exactly this condition. Zanskar says it drilled 35% faster than conventional methods.
The evidence grade here is vendor, and deliberately so. The claim that this is one of the most productive pumped geothermal wells in the United States is Zanskar's, Canary Media publishes no thermal or electrical output figure for the well itself, and the only hard capacity number in the story is the plant's existing 15 MW rating. The company raised $115 million in January.
